Ya you are right in everything but i live in India. This is not a technology driven country. What ever technology comes in US , comes to India only after many years and the cost of technology will be much much higher than the cost in other countries.

You said in five years everything will be virtual. But that is not the case in INDIA. It will take another 500 years, by the time I will be dead.

Thanks for the links to the video and David Lee King's bullet points, Rick. I completely agree with Roy Tennant saying he's not throwing away his iPhone or his laptop because both are used for different purposes. Computers will always be relevant, typing will always be more efficient than texting and as I heard one reference librarian say at the conference, "my fingers are faster than my thumbs."

The move to the cloud is inevitable, it's a faster way to publish and share information, but it seems there's definitely more convincing to be done before everyone feels safe and secure. Speed, convenience and outreach will drive the push for more security.

The success of mobile apps is what I'm personally most interested in watching unfold. The iPhone has a sexy element, but limited (and yes, growing) potential audience aside, just because you make an iPhone app doesn't mean everyone is going to download and use it. I predict the mobile web will be more popular than downloadable apps for that reason.

Your note about libraries needing to successfully market their value-added services is spot on, likely a positive outcome of the current recession with budgets needing justification. More outreach = more touch points = more money set aside.
Thanks again for the post.

Eric, Thanks for clarifying the idea. My brief mention, of course, did not do justice to the idea. Thanks also for the link. I am modifying the post to direct readers to the comment. Rick

Thank you for the mentions, but please allow me to clarify. I would not suggest creating a concordances of the Web. While that would certainly be cool, it would be just about impossible.

Instead, I suggest libraries explore ways to provide tools against texts, such as the creation of concordances. Other tools might be the creation of word clouds, the tracing of ideas through texts, the morphology of words, etc. In posting to the NGC4Lib mailing list I outlined a number of these things, and they were echoed on a PALINET site: http://tinyurl.com/6bsl3z
