The presenters all offered innovative and concrete ways to s-t-r-e-t-c-h staff. I especially liked San Jose's plan to staff the public service area based on the following axiom: When 80% of assistance needed is NOT librarian, why are you essentially placing your doctor in the waiting room? People working in the office answer the phone and can ring floor staff when there’s a call they need to take." This is the most BRILLIANT thing I've heard of. So simple. And yet, so kind. To the patron waiting at the desk.
