Day II brought the Book & Author Breakfast, which featured moderator Alec Baldwin basketball star turned businessman Magic Johnson, and authors Phillipa Gregory and Andre Dubus III. Baldwin, whose marital and family woes are often front page fodder, was promoting his book, “A Promise to Ourselves: Fatherhood, Divorce, and Family Law.” Despite the serious subject matter, he was often quite funny. He also repeatedly sparred with the other presenters (particularly Philippa Gregory) and won laughs throughout the event. Johnson talked about his foray into business and his somewhat unorthodox business practices, placing franchises in communities that are often overlooked – and making sure to pay attention to that community’s particular needs which has resulted in multi million dollar earnings. Philippa Gregory, who chided Baldwin frequently, talked about her novel “The Other Queen: A Novel” about Mary, Queen of Scots. She also promised the audience to always write the very best novel that she could and to always wear fabulous shoes when presenting at conferences and events. Dubus talked about his new novel, “The Garden of Last Days,” and parallels between some of the events pictured and his early life. Attendees were provided copies of “The Other Queen: A Novel,” and “The Garden of Last Days.
