Hello!

January 11th, 2008 by Anne Robert

Hi everyone! I’m Anne Robert, a children’s/teen librarian with the Jacksonville (FL) Public Library. I got to Philly early this morning (at 8am *yawn*) and have done a little sight-seeing. I recommend everyone visit Reading Market - the food there is delicious! I will write more about events happening at Midwinter the next few days. Hope everyone is having a great time in Philly!

    Hey Anne,

I will be watching for your updates and comments about Midwinter from way down here in the heart of Dixie … in Gadsden, Alabama. We are manning the home front here (at the Gadsden Public Library), but I will be letting the rest of the gang here know (from you and the other bloggers) what is happening in Philly at ALA Midwinter. We wish we could all join you, but will be watching for your updates from the Convention Center. Also, wanted to let you know that I use to work in downtown Philly myself and I know exactly what you mean about the Reading Market. Great place to browse around, eat some great Philly cheesesteaks and even get some chicken and dumplings at the Amish counters (besides everything else to see). One place to recommend to you to visit if you can … is the Mutter Museum … a fasinating medical museum located at the College of Physicians (and only a few blocks away from the Convention Center). Look it up if you are interested in medical oddities, ancient medical practices, etc. And, for a very nice dinner (with entertainment), try the Victor Cafe on Dickinson Street in South Philly (Italian section). It is a short cab ride (maybe 15 blocks or so) from City Hall … but the waiters and waitresses are all aspiring opera singers. They will stop in the middle of serving and belt out these terrific arias. Every one of them is an outstanding singer and, since the restaurant is not large, you can see and hear them from anywhere inside. And they are GREAT!!! Call for reservations for sure, and you will not be disappointed. Good Luck at Mid-Winter and we will all be watching for your updates!

    Craig
