Wiki Workshop at Spring Symposium

February 28th, 2007 by Kathleen Hughes

As you may know, PLA is planning to put together a ‘public library’ wiki. The current concept entails building a living, breathing, encyclopedia of public librarianship (not a wiki of or about
the Public Library Association, but a wiki sponsored by the Public Library Association). The plan is to create a basic information organization structure, with categories that can speak to public librarians, support staff, patrons, Friends of the library, trustees, librarians in other types of libraries, library school students, and potential librarians, and to populate that basic category structure with seed content from the many different corners of PLA, which can then be built upon by wiki visitors. We’re going to need your input!

If you’d like to learn more about wikis, what they are, how they work, and what PLA is planning to do, you are welcome to attend an informal wiki workshop on Friday night during the Symposium, for Spring Symposium registrants. We will explore a couple of free wiki applications and show you how they work. The session will be recorded and posted on the PLA Blog in order for the discussion to continue after the Symposium.

The Wiki Workshop will be led by PLA Blog manager and Reading (Massachusetts) public librarian, Andrea Mercado (read more about Andrea at
http://www.librarytechtonics.info/about.html). The workshop will be held on Friday, March 2, from 6-7 p.m., in the Regency I room on the 2nd floor of the Fairmont Hotel. You do not need to register for this informal, drop-in workshop. Hope to see you there! Questions, contact Kathleen Hughes, PLA Manager, Publications at .
