Results Boot Camp II: We prepare for the front lines
November 16th, 2006 by Kim KietzmanToday we tackled allocating space according to priorities and budgeting, a topic I know I find too much fun to be legal. We are finishing up the nitty gritty and preparing to pull it all together to take it home and actually do something with it. It’s a wacky thought - we’re actually prepared to be fully accountable for future planning documents and all the things we say we’ll do in them.
Space - what does your library say about your priorities and goals? What’s front and center, what’s claims the most square footage in your building? How disgusting is your building - and how much of the grime and clutter and stuff taped to the doors are you just no longer seeing? In a marriage, becoming so comfortable with each other that you see the internal attractiveness is really a key to success. In a library, it’s a very trophy wife relationship. Get fresh eyes, get community people to go through buildings with criteria and make assessments, and then clean it up.
Budgets - Ugh. But hey, it is that time of year again, at least in Iowa. I was interested in the different ways one could budget, and why. I hope to implement program budgeting next year along with line item (which is required at the higher level) to show how what we do relates to what we spend relates to how we meet our goals. Being completely accountable for meeting goals with public money was a priority for me before I came to Nashville - I might become obsessive. And not much fun at parties.
