The “L” word (with numbers)

March 24th, 2006 by Brian Smith

Maybe it’s because most of the speakers I’ve seen aren’t librarians, but I haven’t heard “Library 2.0″ uttered in any presentation I’ve attended. The closest call was at a vendor event (with yummy soft pretzels) on Thursday, where PLA President-Elect Susan Hildreth made a reference to “The 21st-Century Library.”

But there’s still the “Community Building Through Your Web Site: Library Blogs and RSS Feeds” session coming up on Saturday morning. I’m thinking about offering the speakers money not to say it. Or maybe I’ll bring them … a shrubbery.

p.s. I expect “Community Building Through Your Web Site” to be an excellent session. Even if they do say it!

Looking forward to that session tomorrow, and I hope we’ll hear Library 2.0.

This is from the PLA blog, Sarah Houghton’s observations:
The librarians here are very customer-service oriented. Every session I’ve been to was user-focused. What can we do for our users? What can we change to do our jobs better? Good for us.

Library 2.0 (yes Michael S. said the L2 word) is Web-centered. “Customer service” is across the spectrum of library services. Maybe public librarians are just taking a broader view of things. Maybe they just haven’t adopted the lingo. Maybe they don’t quite get why the cyber-branch is so important. Maybe the L2 advocates need to make a stronger case for the tie-in to the on-the-ground services.

“Community Building Through Your Web Site” was an excellent session for doing just that. We really need to keep the conversation going, hopefully without the hype.

Wow. I have never heard of L2. But then again, I didn’t know who Frank Kilgore is, and I work as a cataloger (but did not go to library school to become one–which is where I was supposed to learn about him…)

    So much to learn…
