What are you talking about? Ms. Hill made a great presentation on a complicated topic that was well-received by an audience that wasn't entirely on her side. Her point was that being tolerant of other people's beliefs is an important part of being able to work together and better serve others, with an emphasis on service.

I was happy to hear what she said, and I don't think it's at all untrue to say that there are people who identify as conservative librarians who are not as outspokenly in favor of intellectual freedom. I am truly thankful for what she had to say. You must be confusing me with other people in the progressive librarian movement, and you could certainly have learned a few things from Ms. Hill.

Thanks for putting a tolerant pro intellectual freedom face on the conservative librarians

Nice little parting dig there, Jessamyn. Well, you said you were
"from the other angle."

But how have "progressive" librarians demonstrated their commitment to intellectual freedom? By providing nearly unanimous, fulsome support for a totalitarian dictatorship that throws dissidents in prison for 25-year sentences.

They have shown their tolerance by doing everything in their power to hound dissenters out of their online forums.

In short: spare me.

Thank you Jassamyn for doing an outstanding job of summarizing my session this morning. Couple of corrections: there were over 200 folks in the room before all was said and done and also, the Shuttle commander was Rick Husband of the Columbia. His life inspired me to set priorities. Those two minor corrections aside, I enjoyed reading your post and encourage anyone to email me to continue the dialogue. You must have been the lady typing furiously that some participants told me about. ;-)
Thanks again for the time you took to share. -- Susan Hill shill@pauldingcountylibrary.org

I've often thought that many conservative librarians were forced to be in a closet of sorts, and I think it's a shame. I enjoyed reading this post. I'm one of those moderates would like to see more hand holding or reaching across the left and right leanings of ALA. I think law makers would listen more if there were more viewpoints as opined in this session--and the speaker is right: intellectual freedom and funding are very important to libraries, even in rural places.

The God, Family, Job priority list dates back at least to Lombardi, who stressed it to his players. Gale Sayers titled his book "I am Third", so this is not just an Baptist/born again outlook.
