PLA News Alert
March 13th, 2006 by Kathleen HughesNews Alert - 3/13/06
It has come to our attention that Integrated Technology Group is soliciting subscriptions using PLA’s name. Please be advised that PLA is not soliciting members for subscription to any mailing list. Integrated Technology Group is not representing PLA and is being notified to cease and desist. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

It seems the PLA doesn’t have any ethical problem with selling all of our email addresses to exhibitors. The PLA is like the pot calling the kettle black.
I am for anything that reduces SPAM.

I agree.
The PLA says, “please be advised that PLA is not soliciting members for subscription to any mailing list.”
Yet, they are in reality soliciting exhibitors to buy a mailing list of subscribed members.
I guess it all depends on what your definition of “is” is!
I too applaud any attempt to reduce spamming.

I think Integrated Technologies should be applauded for their work to reduce spam. Shame on PLA for making them look like the bad guys. I get too much spam whenever I register for any ALA conference, and I think it is great to have users “opt in”.

This looks very much like an over-reaction on PLA’s part. Perhaps even a little bit hysterical.
It wouldn’t even be a big deal if PLA hadn’t publicly libeled a vendor. But it did.
I can’t say that Integrated Tech’s methods were graceful (and they agree), but they certainly don’t deserve this sort of treatment. They, in fact, deserve an apology, and, at most, a request that they don’t do whatver got PLA’s panties all in a wad again.

Shortly after the Integrated Technology Group email landed in our members’ email boxes, PLA began receiving calls and emails from confused and angry members asking if it was from PLA and asking us to investigate. Clearly, these members found the email misleading and PLA anticipated others would as well. PLA investigated, and based on advice from legal council we posted clarification on our web site.
The PLA conference registration form contains an opt-out checkbox so those who do not wish to receive conference emails may choose not to.

Kathleen:
Would the PLA mind putting some form of reconciliation statement or a link to our response on the PLA site and Conference site as well?
We would like to see an amicable end to this issue soon.
I would be open to adjusting our response statement if there is any language that the PLA considers too combative.
By the way, we do not condone excessively rude and agressive statements on this blog for any reason.

I can’t stand spam. I applaud companies who do everything in their power to make sure if you don’t want to hear from them again……YOU WON’T.
