Belated Introductions

March 23rd, 2006 by Beth Gallaway

I realize I totally forgot to introduce myself. I’m Beth Gallaway. I used to work in a public library as a young adult librarian but now I work as a youth services trainer/consultant at a regional library system in MA, so my patrons are now librarians from public, academic, school and special libraries. This is my fourth time blogging for PLA, and it’s always a little more special when events are here in my neck of the woods (I grew up in Danvers MA, which is famous because it’s the site of Salem Village, where much of the witchcraft hysteria of 1692 took place).

I declined the invitation to sit at the local information booth - just don’t know my way around Beantown well enough - but I’m volunteering with the local arrangements committee and booth sitting during lunch tomorrow & Friday, so if you’re visiting vendors tomorrow and a friendly librarian says “I don’t know, but take a catalog, they’ll be back in a half hour!” that’ll probably be me :)

My “don’t miss” pick for this conference: John Beck’s presentation “Capturing the Hearts and Minds of the Gamer Generation” tomorrow at 2:00 PM in the Sheraton Independence Ballroom. Not only will you gain insight into your library customers born after 1970, but it will help boomer generation librarians understand next generation librarians - perfect for managers as well as front line staff. I heard John speak a year ago, and he’s phenomenal.

And if you are so inspired by him that you want to know how to implement gaming at your library, folks on the LibGaming listserv have organized a gamer meetup to swap ideas at 8:30 PM at the Sheraton. Meet us in the lobby; food is on the agenda; I’ll be the one in the “I’m blogging this” t-shirt.
