“Tips for Creating a Can’t Miss Children’s Web Site”

March 23rd, 2006 by Adrienne Furness

One of the things I most value about conferences is the opportunity to learn from specialists outside the library field. Today I attended “Tips for Creating a Can’t Miss Children’s Web Site” presented by Sara DeWitt, Director of PBS KIDS and Parents Interactive. DeWitt was an excellent speaker – entertaining, interesting, and very clearly engaged in her work. She talked a lot about knowing and focusing on your mission as well as your audience. She also talked about doing usability studies and holding focus groups to make sure you’re accomplishing your goals. This seems like basic common sense, but I don’t think many libraries are taking this approach. I certainly haven’t been at my library, but now I’m all fired up to start working on rethinking the children’s portion of our web site when I get home. This is one of the sessions that was recorded, so if you’re thinking of redesigning your site and missed this session, you might want to consider purchasing the audio at the booth outside the downstairs entrance to the exhibits….
