July 5th Library News Round-Up

I hope you had a happy 4th of July. On with the local library news…

+ Library officials seek $2.8 million to offer ‘storefront’ services – (from The Common Denominator) – “D.C. Public Library officials are asking the city council to allocate $2.8 million of fiscal 2005 surplus funds for creation of four “storefront libraries” to temporarily replace facilities that are scheduled for demolition and reconstruction. The temporary libraries, which officials hope to open this fall, would be located in now-vacant storefronts near the Anacostia, Benning, Watha T. Daniel and Tenley-Friendship branch libraries that were closed last Dec. 30.”

+ Library users support proposed renovation of library – (from The Plymouth Sun Sailor) – “Two public meetings to discuss ideas for the renovation and expansion of the Plymouth Library drew about 60 people, said Janet Lieck, assistant director of operations for Hennepin County Libraries. The community conversations drew current library users and “were very positive,” she said. People were asked to tell what they liked best about the present library, and they talked about the “excellent staff, wide variety of programming for children and volunteer opportunities,” Lieck said.”

+ Crawford County Library System Board closes Lovells branch – (from Crawford County Avalanche) – “Due to various legal concerns, the Lovells branch of the Crawford County Library System (CCLS) was ordered to close by the CCLS board on June 24. The action was taken as a response to contract issues and concern surrounding operations within the Lovells branch that were potentially in violation of Michigan law.”

+ Library on ‘tween’ scene – (from The Times Beacon) – “The Barnegat branch of the Ocean County Library is livening up its activities schedule to provide more recreational opportunities for kids who are not quite teenagers, also known as ‘tweens.” The library hosted a skateboarding demonstration Saturday in its parking lot courtesy of Mark Falk, owner of the Barnegat Bike and Hobby Shop and owner of Attatudz skate shop, located at 698 E. Bay Ave. in Barnegat.”

+ Library sets up shop on Portuguese beach to encourage summer reading – (from AFP) – “With the summer season in full swing, officials in northern Portugal are setting up a library at a popular beach to encourage sunseekers to read as they tan by the seaside. The library will operate from two locations along the beach in Povoa de Varzim, a popular fishing port resort town located 380 kilometres (235 miles) north of Lisbon, offering books, magazines and newspapers on short-term loan.”

+ Richmond Hill Library Prepares To Party Like It’s (Still) 1905 – (from The Queens Chronicle) – “The Friends of the Richmond Hill Library, Queens Quilters and the Richmond Hill Historical Society will celebrate the 100th birthday of the library, which was built in 1905 with money provided by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.”

+ Green Hills library to get $5.5 million renovation – (from The Daily Southtown) – “Green Hills Public Library patrons will be able to grab a cup of Starbucks coffee, select a magazine from an expanded periodicals section and relax in a second-floor screened-in porch area. Those are some of the amenities being planned by library officials as they get ready to send a $5.5 million renovation and expansion project out to bid.”

+ South Shore Library Logs 120-Plus Members – (from TBO Southshore) – “Long before its doors open, the South Shore Regional Library already has attracted a lot of friends. A Friends of the Library group has enlisted more than 120 members, said the group’s president, Jim Duffy.”

+ Public library showing off new improvements – (from the Reporter) – “Since it reopened in April, many clients have rediscovered the Vacaville Public Library Cultural Center and have experienced the branch’s numerous improvements including new carpet and paint, new displays, new customer service desk and, of course, a new computer center.”
