July 15th Library News Round-Up


+ (Honesdale, PA) – Honesdale Library, lacking space, may need to move – (from The River Reporter) – “The need for space at the Wayne County Library in Honesdale is so critical that the library will, in all likelihood, be moved to another location within a year or two. Molly Rodgers, system administrator of the Wayne Library Authority, reported to the Wayne County Commissioners on July 7 the results of a study of the current seven-library system and its projected needs over the next 20 years.”

+ (Cambridge, MA) – State picks up some of library tab – (from Cambridge Chronicle) – “Building a signature library will be a bit easier on residents’ wallets, thanks to nearly $7 million from the state. The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners on Friday awarded the grant to the Cambridge Public Library. The long-awaited $63 million expansion of the Main Library is under way at the Broadway location. “I think it bodes well for the taxpayers of Cambridge,” said Rich Rossi, deputy city manager. He said the city had hoped to get a few million from the grant, but that he was surprised learn that the city would instead be getting $6.7 million.”

+ (Tampa, FL) – Libraries Invest In Spill Socks To Prepare For Storm Flooding – (from The Tampa Tribune) – “Librarians are armed and ready to face this year’s hurricane season and the ominous threat that water will invade the public’s book stacks.”"They’re just inconvenient,” said Suzy George, the system’s chief librarian. Now, with hurricane season under way, seven of the 24 Tampa-Hillsborough County libraries have stocked up on lightweight industrial spill socks that will be a quick, manageable solution to water leakage.”

+ (Anacortes , WA) – Anacortes library gets gift for jazz – (from The Seattle Times) – “The gently sculpted landscape of the Skagit Valley has long been a retreat for painters and poets, but apparently it attracted at least one very wealthy jazz musician, as well. Patricia Manieri has bequeathed the Anacortes Public Library more than $700,000 to establish a “jazz and/or swing music collection” in the name of her late husband, Dominic, an amateur saxophonist who worked as a chemist and engineer.”

+ (Rogers, AR) – Children’s Library moves to new space – (from The Benton County Daily Record) – “At one point, using staff and volunteers to move into the new Children’s Library was considered, but with 110,000 items in the collection, as well as furniture and supplies, it was just too big a job, director Judy Casey said. Professionals were called in. The goal was to move into the new space without closing the entire Rogers Public Library.”

+ (Bangor, ME) – Governor’s library visit spurs kids’ dreams – (from Bangor Daily News) – “As children we all had dreams about becoming a firefighter, a doctor, or even the next president, but Jacob Lana, 4, of Hermon, insisted Thursday at the Bangor Public Library that he wanted to become a “superhero policeman.”

+ (Fairfield, CT) – A Home for Book Lovers – (from The Fairfield Citizen) – “”It’s money well spent,” pronounced Vincent Messineo as he sat at a table in the media room, Money magazine splayed in front of him. The main branch of the Fairfield Public Library reopened Monday after a $12 million renovation, with approximately 70 patrons gathered for cookies and a small ribbon-cutting ceremony. Les Srager, the chairman of Board of Library Trustees; Barbara Bressler and Charlotte Garrell of the Library Building Committee; and First Selectman Kenneth Flatto spoke in the small ceremony, said Town Librarian Tom Geoffino.”
