June 29th Library News Round-Up

+ Cows make the day at Greenland library – (from Portsmouth Herald) – “Continuing a tradition that has lasted for more years than anyone can remember, Tuesday was Cow Day at the Weeks Public Library.”

+ Business booming at library – (from Portsmouth Herald) – “In an age of electronic media, the staff at Weeks Public Library are proving to have good old-fashioned staying power, and a lot of community support. Over the past four years, the number of items checked out by patrons has doubled.”

+ The Video Game Librarian: Six Months Later – (from Gaming Target) – “It has been six months since PlayStation 2 games were added to the collection of the library I work at. In those six months the collection has grown from the meager six titles originally offered on that first day to a healthy collection of 40. Best of all, not a single game has been lost or damaged (although several are on the extended overdue list). Not that I don’t cringe everytime someone brings back a disc that looks like they used it as a dinner plate.”

+ Fair lords and ladies attend library’s ‘Night of Knights’ – (from The News Guard) – “Driftwood Public Library hosted a “Medieval Night of Knights” last Wednesday with help from the Lincoln County Society for Creative Anachronism. The evening was part of the library’s the summer reading program, “Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds.”

+ Library trustee Rogge receives state, national recognition – (from Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader) – “Patience Rogge of Port Townsend has been awarded a lifetime membership in the Washington Library Association, and her name has been added to the American Library. Association/American Library Trustee Association (ALA/ALTA) National Advocacy Honor Roll. She received these honors for her work as a library trustee for the Jefferson County Library and for her work as an advocate for libraries statewide. Rogge served as a library board trustee for the last 11 years.”

+ City public library’s condition is ‘grave’ – (from The Sentinel and Enterprise) – “The library has struggled with a leaky roof in its children’s section, but repairs are nearly complete, Imprescia said. Councilor at large Stephen L. DiNatale said he has received complaints from parents who avoid the Fitchburg Public Library because of its aging facilities.”

+ Library brochure wins award – (from The News Banner) – “Last Sunday, the St. Tammany Parish Library was honored by LAMA, a division of the American Library Association, for its Services Brochure. The brochure, designed and produced by Gallinghouse & Associates Inc, received an honorable mention for the 2005 Best of Show competition in its category. LAMA received almost 360 entries for this competition. The services brochure explains the full scope of what the St. Tammany Parish Library System has to offer.”
