Have you seen the wiki?

May 24th, 2005 by Andrea Mercado

As you make your plans to attend the ALA annual conference in Chicago this June, you will want to check out the unofficial wiki for the 2005 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, set up by Meredith Wolfwater.

Librarians attending the conference who have never been to Chicago will benefit from the local information, including the restaurant and bar listings,
tips on choosing a hotel, and even information on neighborhoods and attractions. If you’ve never been to an ALA conference before, read the tips for newbies, follow the link to the New Members Round Table (NMRT) official conference page off the home page of the wiki, and add any questions you have to the Questions from Newbies page. And don’t forget to check out the official and unofficial calendars of events, the list of bloggers who will be covering the conference, as well as the other sections of the wiki.

Along with being an excellent resource for librarians attending the conference, this wiki is a prime opportunity for librarians who have never used a wiki before to have a new technological experience. Even if you aren’t going to the conference, you can contribute your knowledge about attending ALA conferences, the Chicago area, how to pick a hotel on a budget, or answer newbie questions. Each page has a “Discuss” tab at the top, which enables you to ask questions or make comments about that page’s content, a great way to learn more about the wiki and how it ticks. If nothing else, visit the wiki and watch an example of how a good wiki works, it’s positive and negative points, and get a sense of how you could apply wiki technology appropriately.

(Visit the Help: Contents page from Wikipedia if you need more information on how to browse and edit a wiki once you get there.)
